Special thanks to Christopher Walters for the source tape and Ortega for audio help.

NOTE: This encode is from a 20 year old source tape (Comedy Channel era), so please adjust your expectations accordingly. There was some pretty significant audio distortion in the source tape, and the print Best Brains used of the movie itself wasn't great to begin with, so quality of this encode is the best I could squeeze out.
Trivia: FORREST TUCKER (1919-1986) has made some fairly good films (1940-The Westerner; 1946-The Yearling; 1958-Auntie Mame; and1970-Chisum), some bland ones (1950-The Nevadan; 1952-Montana Belle) and some turkeys (1958-The Cosmic Monsters; 1977-Walking Tall--The Final Chapter), but most of us know him for his role of Sergeant O'Rourke on TV's F-Troop. An episode of the WB Network's animated series Freakazoid did a remarkably observant parody of this movie, with Freakazoid in the Forrest Tucker role.
Trivia: Born Barbara Nickerauer, character actress and former model BARBARA NICHOLS (1929-1976) always played the wise-cracking blonde with the nasal Brooklyn accent, the tart with repartee, unusual for her time as most blondes were portrayed as vacuous. Some of her films: 1954-River of No Return (with Marilyn Monroe); 1956-The King and Four Queens; 1957-The Pajama Game; 1960-The Scarface Mob; 1961-Where the Boys Are; 1964-The Disorderly Orderly (with Jerry Lewis); 1965-The Loved One (with Jonathan Winters); 1966-The Swinger; 1968-The Power; and 1976-Won Ton Ton, the Dog Who Saved Hollywood. Nichols had a memorable recurring role of Miss Chickadee on TV's Beverly Hillbillies.

Born in Michigan in 1939, truly huge (7' 2" tall) RICHARD KIEL, who plays the evil Dr. Kolos here, also appears briefly as a pinhead in 411-THE MAGIC SWORD; as the Solarite monster in 902-THE PHANTOM PLANET; and, of course, plays the title role in 506-EEGAH! He's perhaps most famous for playing the maniacal, orthodontically-challenged Jaws in the James Bond flicks The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) and Moonraker (1979). His filmography also includes: 1962-House of the Damned; 1964-Roustabout; 1974-The Longest Yard; 1975-Flash & Firecat; 1976-Silver Streak; 1978-Force 10 from Navarone; Humanoid; They Went That-A-Way; 1981-So Fine; War of the Wizards; 1983-Hysterical; 1984-Cannonball Run II; Mad Mission 3; 1985-Pale Rider; 1990-Think Big; and 1996-Happy Gilmore (with Adam Sadler, ack!). Says Kiel, "My wife is 5' 4" and everybody asks me how we do it."
Many of us remember Christopher Lee way before he was Count Dooku or Saruman, as a B actor best know for his Hammer "Dracula" films. Here's a chance to see Chris in his former glory: as a stereotypical Asian villain complete with slanted eyes, a "Fu Manchu" mustache (well, I guess he *is* playing Fu Manchu here) and looking embarrassed in a bad, bad movie.

This experiment gets a bad rap - it's actually pretty funny.
323- THE CASTLE OF FU-MANCHU

First shown: 1/18/92
Opening: The SOL's Teen Club
Invention exchange: The bots offer an extremely useful telephone transducer chip, while all Joel has is the big head (again), the Joe Besser "Stinky" Bomb
Host segment 1: Crow decries "The Miss Saigon Syndrome," J&TB become distraught, the Mads are pleased
Host segment 2: The Shriner Flying Carpet sketch collapses into weeping; delighted, the Mads order out
Host segment 3: The bots are inconsolable, Joel tries to cheer them up with the story of Fu-Manchu, but the pain becomes too much. The Mads celebrate
End: J&TB are utterly beaten, the Mads toast their victory and are so cocky they try to riff the film themselves! Gotcha!
Stinger: Monkey pile on the castle guard!
Highlights from his 100+ movies: 1971-Count Dracula; 1957-Curse of Frankenstein; 1965-Dr. Terror's House of Horrors; 1968-Dracula Has Risen from the Grave; 1964-Hercules in the Haunted World; 1972-Horror Express; 1959-Hound of the Baskervilles; 1959-The Mummy; 1978-Return from Witch Mountain; 1974-Three Musketeers. Plus these other Fu Manchu movies: 1965-The Face of Fu Manchu; 1966-The Brides of Fu Manchu; and 1967-Vengeance of Fu Manchu.

RICHARD GREENE (1914-1985) starred in mostly British adventure movies before his successful Brit TV portrayal of Robin Hood in the 1950's. His other films include: 1938-Submarine Patrol; 1938-The Little Princess (with Shirley Temple); 1939-The Hound of the Baskervilles; 1950-The Desert Hawk; 1953-Captain Scarlet; 1961-The Sword of Sherwood Forest; and 1967-Dangerous Island.
• For those who missed the note last week, I am skipping episode 521- SANTA CLAUS for the time being. I will get to it at the end of season 5, as the Christmas season is getting under way. Seems more appropriate.
• This movie has a great opening half hour and pretty exciting last 20 minutes. Unfortunately, it also has a deadly 40 minutes in the middle. The segments are hit and miss, with a wonderful finsh. All in all, it’s in the fair-to-good range.
• Invention exchange fadeaway watch: The mace mousse seems to be a genuine invention. Frank is hilarious, by the way. Mike’s still busy escaping–though he does CALL it an invention!
Non-spaghetti ball bumpers: pan to beaker; closeup on datebook.
• Movie observation: An example of stupid script writing: The matron asks the fueding inmates: “Who started this?” What real matron would bother? Has that EVER worked?
• Segment 1 was an instant hit and within hours MSTie internet was bursting with peons to doughy guys. And as a doughy guy myself, I enjoyed it. Mike really belts out his part.
• Annoying commercial: One of those stupid Mentos commercials, which acts as a sort of setup for segement 3! Was it intentional?
• Callbacks: My tape was from the premier of the episiode (from this point forward most of my tapes will be from the premieres): “Mitchell!” Of courese, there are too many callbacks to count in segment 2. And “Why don’t they look?” has already joined the rotation.
• Mike carries Servo by the neck when they enter the theater after segment 2.
• Of course this episode also gave us the classic line: “He’ll never touch you, Terry, you’re dirt.” The Brains apparently really liked because it was used many times thereafter.
• Um, the movie shows an obelisk and Mike (I think) says “The Roddy McDowell monument!” Um, huh? If they’d said “The Milton Berle monument” I’d get it. Was Roddy known for his, um, endowment?
• The mace mousse bit at the end just gets funnier and funnier. It’s very reminiscent to the “Daddy-O” ending.
• Fave riff: “You’re gonna have to get in line. Couple o’ cows ahead of you.”
Trivia: On the phone inside the movie theater, character Mike mentions wanting to see Gordon's ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE. You can see the lobbycards for it in the background, and a poster appears outside the theater. Lobbycards and posters for 309-THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN also appear not-so-subtly.

THE SPIDER was retitled as EARTH VS. THE SPIDER to cash in on the name of another successful movie with a similar title, EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS (1956).

Tall, dark and gaunt, actor MERRITT STONE was in four B.I.G. MSTed movies: Carol's dad in 313-EARTH VS. THE SPIDER; a consoling cop in 319-WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST; a king in 411-THE MAGIC SWORD; and the minister in 414-TORMENTED. He made three films in 1953: Port Sinister; Problem Girls; and Sword of Venus.

Born Gene Stuttenroth, GENE ROTH (1903-1976) is easy to locate because he looks like Gary Busey's father with a craggy face with baggy eyes. He was the sheriff in both 313-EARTH VS. THE SPIDER and 406-ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES. He was the lunch counter guy in 414-TORMENTED and a railroad conductor in 419-THE REBEL SET. His other films include: 1952-Red Planet Mars; 1957-Zombies of Mora Tau; 1958-She Demons; and 1961-The Cat Burglar. Roth also frequently played the heavy in the Three Stooges shorts with Shemp and later Joe as the third Stooge.

And not to be confused with the two previous actors, B.I.G. bit player JACK KOSSLYN portrayed Fraser in 313-EARTH VS. THE SPIDER; a lieutenant in 309-THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN; the KTLA newscaster in 319-WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST; and the ogre in 411-THE MAGIC SWORD. His other films include: 1957-The Devil's Hairpin; 1958-Attack of the Puppet People; 1973-Breezy; and 1977-Empire of the Ants. Kosslyn also made some films with Clint Eastwood: Play Misty for Me; The Eiger Sanction; and High Plains Drifter.

Pert JUNE KENNEY, who plays Mike's girlfriend Carol here, can also be seen as Asmild in 317-VIKING WOMEN and as Betty in 607-BLOODLUST. She was also in Mr. B.I.G.'s Attack of the Puppet People; The Cat Burglar; and Corman's Sorority Girl.
Trivia: From the late 1940's to the early 1960's, there were hundreds of atomic tests performed at Yucca Flats, Nevada. The government plans on burying over 77,000 tons of nuclear waste in vast tunnels already dug in nearby Yucca Mountain. The site is 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

The geiger counter used in this movie and in 619-RED ZONE CUBA was provided by HOWARD MORRISON, who was a pal and roommate of an AOL MSTie's father. Like many others in the 1950's, they unsuccessfully tried their luck in uranium prospecting out West. (This uranium-mania was even depicted in an episode of TV's I Love Lucy, in which Lucy and pals accompanied Fred MacMurray on a zany uranium hunt!)
Note: This is a v2 of the original MST3K Experiment 807 nearly four years ago. Some users have experienced a skip or a total dump to the menu at approx 1:21 in the original file. This encode is intended to provide a replacement to those experiencing the problem. This encode is from the same source tape, and is virtually identical in terms of quality. If the 2005 encode works in your environment, there is no need to download this version.

Hot fiery passions spill over into murder at Spooner Beach Florida in the 1950's. A mysterious peeping tom lurks in the underbrush, hoping to get a glimpse of a scrawny spinster (but, hey, who hasn't?). And then, TERROR!!!

Oh, wait a minute, I'm sure the Terror was here a minute ago, let me look around and see... Uh, I'm sure the Terror will be here in a minute, please be patient.

Well, a couple of scientists start bartering with ugly people from the future who desire to mate with slightly less ugly people from our time, and then the ugly cat dies and is given a burial at sea. This episode features lots of implied undressing, and also implies shockingly upsetting "poon". The peeping tom (played by Jimmy Carter in a charming cameo appearance) has a nice setup in a secluded shack, and should have been featured more prominently in the film.
412- HERCULES AND THE CAPTIVE WOMEN

(Info last modified on 2008-03-20 00:43:54 GMT)

First shown: 9/12/92
Opening: Gypsy wants to watch the movie and Joel agrees
Invention exchange: The lawn baby, the womb-mate
Host segment 1: “Good-natured” brawling
Host segment 2: Crow’s “history” of Hercules
Host segment 3: The bots’ lame Hercules action figure
End: Laying the Hercules movies to rest, letter, Frank being chased by mower
Stinger: “Hercules! Help me!”

• This is a sneaky episode. I remember not liking it and thinking it’s the least funny of the sword-and-sandal outings, but on this viewing I warmed to it quite a bit. And I’d forgotten that it includes the classic line: “Today is dedicated to Uranus.”
• And I’d also forgotten that this is the landmark episode in which Gypsy watches a portion of the movie along with J&tB. Joel’s confidence in Gypsy is admirable, but let’s note for the record that, sadly, Crow and Tom’s instincts were correct. Gypsy is not down with the street.
• As we tune into Deep 13, Frank is noisily singing the “I sing whenever I sing whenever I sing” song from “Giant Gila Monster.”
• Joel says “Zatharatu” when he means to say Zarathustra. They keep going.
• Despite all the hoopla to the contrary, this is NOT the last of the Hercules movies.
• As Tom sagely notes: “This would really be exciting if I knew what was goin’ on.” All the excitement about Gypsy in the theater takes place when the movie tries to set up the plot, with the result that I never did really figure out what the heck is going on in this movie. Part of it has to do with the strange plot break that takes place after the first commercial. Before the commercial, there are portents of danger and Herc is tossin’ thrones around.
Trivia: The parrot-like costume is left over from 701-NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST, and was worn again by uncredited actor ROSS STURLIN. He also helped make and wore a leech costume in 406-ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES. Sturlin later lost sight in one eye after a stunt accident on the TV series Combat.

Once again, stock footage from ONE MILLION B.C. was used. Exterior water scenes were done at the Arboretum in Arcadia, California. Other exterior shots were filmed at Bronson Canyon, also used for 107-ROBOT MONSTER; 210-KING DINOSAUR; 311-IT CONQUERED THE WORLD; 317-VIKING WOMEN; 319-WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST; 404-TEENAGERS FROM OUTER SPACE; and 701-NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST.

One guy who knew about that costume reappearing was actor EDWIN "ED" NELSON, who plays a caveteen here and portrayed Dave Randall in 701-NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST. Nelson also was to appear in 406-ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES and worked with Sturlin on the leech costumes, only to be called away to appear in another film. He also appeared in K15-SUPERDOME; 503-SWAMP DIAMONDS and 814-RIDING WITH DEATH. Other Nelson films are: 1959-A Bucket of Blood; 1957-Invasion of the Saucermen; 1958-The Brain Eaters (directed by Bruno VeSota); and 1959-T-Bird Gang. He's done a lot of TV, including the series Peyton Place.

ROBERT SHAYNE, who plays the fire-keeper here, can also be seen as Prof. Bradshaw in 409-THE INDESTRUCTIBLE MAN and as Lt. Cassidy in 419-THE REBEL SET. You can also catch him in The Giant Claw, The Neanderthal Man, and Corman's War of the Satellites. Shayne is most recognized as Inspector Henderson in TV's The Adventures of Superman. He was in a few A-pictures like 1944's Mr. Skeffington (with Bette Davis) and 1945's Christmas in Connecticut (with Barbara Stanwyck).

In this movie, JUNE JOCELYN played Robert Vaughn's doting mother. You can see her in three B.I.G. movies too: a nurse in 309-THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN; a worried mother in its sequel, 319-WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST; and Merritt Stone's long-suffering widow in 313-EARTH VS. THE SPIDER. Other of Jocelyn's films are: 1957-Fear Strikes Out; Rockabilly Baby; 1958-Attack of the Puppet People; Vertigo (directed by Alfred Hitchcock); and 1966-Runaway Girl.

Screenwriter R. WRIGHT CAMPBELL, who got an Oscar nomination for his screenplay for 1957's The Man of a Thousand Faces (about Lon Chaney, Sr. and starring James Cagney), would find steady employment writing for Roger Corman and American International Pictures: besides TEENAGE CAVEMAN, he wrote (and sometimes acted in) 1955's Five Guns West (Corman's first movie); 1963's The Young Racers; and 1967's Hell's Angels on Wheels.

After the break, Herc wakes up on a ship and everybody is smirking silently at him. The heck? Then there’s something about Atlantis and girls inn rocks and I don’t know what all.
• Does this story resemble any actual ancient tale? Was there ever a King Androcles (with or without a lion)?
• Gypsy’s riff: “They’re steam-cleaning the horses!” delights J&tB. Eh, not bad. Of her few riffs, I actually like “Oh, they’ve got a fun friend” better.
• By my count, Gypsy lasts 5 and a half minutes. Sheesh, Gypsy, these sword-and-sandal things are among the more watchable movies MST did! What a lightweight!
• Gypsy exits left. A few other chracters have exited or entered this way. Where does that exit lead? And how do they eat and breathe?
• Firesign Theatre reference: “…The Golden Hind”
• Crow falls apart almost immediately during the good-natured brawling. Trace rolls with it brilliantly.
• I never noticed before that, a couple of times, they do a needle drop on that musical sting that I think was originally composed for “This Island Earth” and that I’ve heard in a lot of Universal movies.
• Crow goes a bit overboard with the “I have my rights! It was Callahan!” bit. (For those who don’t know, it’s a reference to the movie “Dirty Harry.”) He does it five times by my count, practically every time the little guy in the movie has a line.
• Callback: “Hurry, Diana!” (Undersea Kingdom)
• My copy, from 1995, included the little “facts” about the movie as the commercial breaks ended. Two of them are only tangentally related to this movie–they discuss other actors who also played Hercules. Thin gruel.
• That’s Frank as the voice of the action figure when he says “I’m so sleepy…” but the final comment is by Mike. Wonder why they didn’t just have one of them do all the comments?
• Fave riff: Dear lord, the canary exploded!
Trivia: Born Walter Jack Palahnuik in 1920, gruff actor JACK PALANCE has a fighter's face because he use to be a professional boxer. More facial alterations happened when a bomber, which he was piloting in WWII, crashed, and he had extensive facial plastic surgery to repair damage done by burns...adding to the rugged look we know and are so fond of today. For his great film performances, Palance was nominated twice for an Oscar, for 1952's Sudden Fear and 1953's Shane, before he finally won for 1991's City Slickers, a Western-comedy-adventure starring Billy Crystal (than whom he craps bigger per his joke at the Oscar ceremony). His other films include: 1950-Panic in the Streets; 1954-Sign of the Pagan; 1955-The Big Knife; 1962-Barabbas; 1967-The Professionals; 1978-Angels' Brigade a.k.a. 622-ANGELS REVENGE; 1987-Gor; 1988-OUTLAW OF GOR; Bagdad Cafe; 1989-Batman (starring Michael Keaton); and 1994-The Swan Princess (animated). Palance won an Emmy for his moving performance in Rod Serling's Requiem for a Heavyweight (1955), which aired as part of CBS' Playhouse 90. You may also remember him appearing on TV, hosting Ripley's Believe It or Not.

Writer and philosophy teacher John Frederick Lange, Jr. used the pseudonym JOHN NORMAN, when he penned the sci-fi novels which depicted the adventures on the planet Gor. There are at least ten in the series: 1966's Tarnsman of Gor; 1967's OUTLAW OF GOR; 1968's Priest-Kings of Gor; 1969-Nomads of Gor; 1970's Assassin of Gor; 1971's Raiders of Gor; 1972's Captive of Gor; 1974's Hunters of Gor; 1976's Tribesmen of Gor; and 1977's Slave Girl of Gor.
Trivia: CAMERON MITCHELL (1918-1994) started on the stage prior to serving in World War II. He had dreams of signing a baseball contract with the Detroit Tigers, but opted to sign with MGM when offered in 1945. His films include: 1951-Death of a Salesman; Flight to Mars; 1952-How to Marry a Millionaire (with Marilyn Monroe); 1953-The Robe; 1954-Gorilla at Large (with Anne Bancroft); 1956-Carousel; 1957-Monkey on My Back; 1978-The Swarm; 1981-Frankenstein Island; 1982-My Favorite Year (with Peter O'Toole); and 1988's 820-SPACE MUTINY. He did many films in Europe in the 1960's, before starring in TV's The High Chapparal.

Born in Minneapolis in 1908, actor LEW AYRES had the lead in his third film, the magnificent 1930 anti-war movie All Quiet on the Western Front (which received the Best Picture Oscar), and became one of the most popular leading men of the 1930's, doing the Dr. Kildare series of nine movies. Ayres was married to actress/dancer Ginger Rogers from 1934-1936. At the outbreak of World War II, he was one of the most famous (and few) people to declare himself a conscientious objector and refused to bear weapons in military service, thus making him very unpopular among the press and movie fans. He did serve as a medic's and chaplain's aide, achieving the rank of sergeant with three battle stars. More because of his age than his war stance, Ayres discovered that leading man roles were scarce for him upon his return to Hollywood, although he was an Oscar nominee for the 1948's Johnny Belinda. In addition to the many character roles in various TV series, he did make a movie later in life...the Battle for the Planet of the Apes. World peace continued to be his consuming passion until his death in 1996. Some of his other notable films are: 1929-The Kiss (with Greta Garbo); 1938-Holiday (as Katharine Hepburn's drunk brother); and 1962-Advise and Consent. You can also see him in Episode #163 of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, in which he played Murray Slaughter's father who went out on a date with Mary!
Angoraphobes beware, cause Ed Wood's all squishy again.

Ed Wood's up to his usual tricks despite being restricted to just writing the screenplay for this one. Paula, the girl our Ed wishes sometimes that he could be, is a nogoodnik headed for big trouble. Fortunately her evil antics are balanced against the more benevolent insanity of the daughter of a modern electrical home in "Young Man's Fancy."
Encoded from an EP tape straight from cable. Analog audio cropped, deinterlace flicker removal (Adobe Premiere) used, otherwise very little filtering. Audio normalized as per my usual process.
