Corral with Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas; 1960's Heller in Pink Tights starring Sophia Loren and Anthony Quinn; and 1971's Going Home with Robert Mitchum.

X MARKS THE SPOT was the first short riffed by MST3K, which came from the vast collection of film archivist RICK PRELINGER, born in 1953. If Prelinger had not been on a mission to save these corporate, governmental and educational films (25,000 saved of the 600,000 made from the 1930's through the 1960's), they probably would have been lost forever. Even more than Hollywood's feature films, these short films document the mores and living habits American society as well as corporate viewpoints. Older Americans remember seeing some of these shorts in movie theaters prior to a double feature, and most Baby Boomers saw some of these shorts in school. You can learn about these shorts through his first CD-ROM, "Ephemeral Films 1931-1960," and his subsequent twelve CD-ROM set entitled "Our Secret Century."
